A School Built by Community
Community School of West Seattle was founded in 2005 by a group of local parents who believed young children deserve a learning environment centered around curiosity, creativity, and connection.
From the beginning, the vision was to create a school where children could explore, play, and grow in a space that honors their ideas and natural sense of wonder.
Today, Community School of West Seattle continues that vision as a Reggio-inspired, play-based preschool where children are encouraged to ask questions, investigate their interests, and build meaningful relationships with peers and teachers.
Located in the heart of West Seattle, our school is more than just a place for early education — it’s a community. Families, educators, and children work together to create an environment where every child feels seen, respected, and valued.
Our educators observe children’s interests and use them as the foundation for learning experiences. Whether children are building with natural materials, creating art, exploring science, or playing outdoors, their ideas guide the journey.
At Community School of West Seattle, we focus on nurturing confident learners, kind community members, and curious explorers.
Where Children Play, explore, and learn …
At Community School of West Seattle, we believe play is the foundation of meaningful learning.
Children are naturally curious, capable, and full of ideas. When their questions are honored and their voices valued, learning becomes joyful, and lasts a lifetime. Our classrooms are intentionally designed to invite exploration, collaboration, creativity, and deep thinking.
Inspired by the Reggio Emilia philosophy, we see children as competent co-creators of knowledge and the environment as a powerful teacher alongside educators and peers.
We serve children ages 2.5 through 5 years old, supporting their growth toward kindergarten with confidence, independence, and a strong sense of belonging.
Community is central to who we are. As a nonprofit school governed by a volunteer Board of Directors, we are committed to cultivating an inclusive, welcoming environment for children, families, and educators of all backgrounds, identities, and family structures.
