Curriculum Rooted in Curiosity

At Community School of West Seattle, we believe children are capable, curious, and deeply connected to the world around them. Inspired by the Reggio Emilia approach, our curriculum emerges through play, relationships, creativity, and meaningful exploration.

We view childhood as a meaningful stage of life — one filled with wonder, discovery, connection, and joy. Children learn best through hands-on experiences, collaboration, movement, conversation, and play.

WHAT GUIDES OUR WORK

The Environment as the Third Teacher

Our classrooms are intentionally designed to spark curiosity, independence, and discovery. Materials are thoughtfully curated to invite exploration, creativity, and meaningful engagement.

From natural materials and open-ended provocations to inviting spaces and studio experiences, the environment plays an active role in children’s learning.

Relationships & Community

Strong relationships are at the heart of our school. We prioritize connection, collaboration, and respect between children, educators, and families.

Our multi-age classrooms encourage mentorship, empathy, leadership, and cooperation. Families are active partners in the learning journey, and community experiences are woven throughout the school year.

Social-Emotional Learning

We believe emotional development is foundational to all learning. Educators support children in building self-awareness, empathy, communication skills, resilience, and conflict resolution strategies.

Children are encouraged to express emotions, advocate for themselves, and care for one another within a supportive classroom community.

Play-Based & Inquiry-Driven Learning

We believe play is essential to healthy development and deep learning. Through play, children build social skills, problem-solving abilities, emotional regulation, language, creativity, and confidence.

Teachers observe children closely and build curriculum from their interests, questions, and ideas. Long-term projects and investigations allow learning to emerge naturally and meaningfully.

Creative Expression & the Studio

We believe children communicate and make meaning in many ways — through art, movement, storytelling, construction, sensory experiences, dramatic play, and more.

Our Studio space supports open-ended exploration, creative problem-solving, and self-expression while encouraging children to communicate ideas, experiment with materials, and engage in collaborative learning experiences. We believe children communicate and make meaning in many ways — through art, movement, storytelling, construction, sensory experiences, dramatic play, and more.

Anti-Bias & Inclusive Education

At CSWS, we are committed to creating an inclusive and equitable learning environment where all children and families feel seen, valued, and respected.

We celebrate diversity and intentionally engage children in age-appropriate conversations about fairness, identity, kindness, and belonging. Our goal is to help children develop empathy, confidence, and respect for themselves and others.
